ABQ Technological Education Eligibility Requirements

 

To be eligible for any ABQ Technological Education program, applicants must hold a Certificate of Qualification (COQ) or Interim Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers.

If you do not already hold a COQ, you may wish to consider applying for initial technological teacher certification through the Queen’s Faculty of Education’s summer internship or fall/winter programs. Iinformation is available through the Education Registrar's Office.

The entrance requirements for all ABQ Technological Education courses vary slightly depending on the nature of the applicant's degree or diploma.

 

HOLDERS OF A NON-TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION DEGREE

HOLDERS OF A
TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION  B.Ed/Dip.Ed

Requirements for all Grades 9 & 10 ABQ Technological Education programs:

Applicants must submit evidence of the following:  

At least five (5) years of full-time wage-earning experience in the subject matter of the chosen course. Teaching experience and/or volunteer experience is not considered.

OR

At least two (2) years of full-time wage-earning experience AND successful completion of a post-secondary education program in the area for which qualification is sought. The program must be a minimum of six (6) semesters of academic study directly related to the selected ABQ Technological Education course.

Applicants who meet these requirements are eligible to apply for:

  • Communications Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Construction Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Hospitality Services Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Manufacturing Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Technological Design Gr. 9 & 10
  • Transportation Technology Gr. 9 & 10

Requirements for Grades 11 & 12 ABQ Technological Education  programs:

Applicants must have completed the Grades 9 & 10 tech qualification in that field in order to be eligible to enrol in a Grades 11 & 12 course. In addition, applicants are required to show proof of one (1) year of documented full-time wage earning experience in the subject area.

Applicants who meet these requirements are eligible to apply for:

  • Communications Technology Gr. 11 & 12 (New for Fall 2010!)
  • Construction Technology Gr. 11 & 12
  • Hospitality Services Technology Gr. 11 & 12
  • Manufacturing Technology Gr. 11 & 12
  • Technological Design Gr. 11 & 12 (New for Fall 2010!)

Notes:

Queen’s University requires candidates to be well rounded in their fields. Applicants will need to demonstrate broad based experience within the field of their selected course.  

Applicants to ABQ Transportation Technology must already hold an Ontario Automotive Service Technician license.

Requirements for all Grades 9 & 10 ABQ Technological Education programs:

Applicants who hold a basic qualification in any technological education subject are eligible to apply for any ABQ Technological Education course (Grades 9 & 10) at the Faculty of Education:

  • Communications Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Construction Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Hospitality Services Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Manufacturing Technology Gr. 9 & 10
  • Technological Design Gr. 9 & 10  
  • Transportation Technology Gr. 9 & 10

 

**An entry in Design and Technology Part 1 is not equivalent to a basic qualification in technological education.

Requirements for Grades 11 & 12 ABQ Technological Education  programs:

Applicants must have completed the Grades 9 & 10 tech Qualification in that field in order to be eligible to enroll in a Grades 11 & 12 course. In addition, applicants are required to show proof of one (1) year of documented full-time wage earning experience in the subject area.

  • Communications Technology Gr. 11 & 12 (New for Fall 2010!)
  • Construction Technology Gr. 11 & 12
  • Hospitality Services Technology Gr. 11 & 12

Notes:

Applicants to ABQ transportation technology are required to hold an Ontario certified mechanic’s license.

 

 

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION TO CERTIFY WORK EXPERIENCE

An original letter on official company letterhead. Applicants must submit a signed letter by a supervisor familiar with the applicant's work. In addition to the supervisor’s name and title, the letter must indicate the supervisor's address and contact phone number and/or e-mail address. The content of the letter must include:
• Your name and your position(s) in the company.
• The length of each work experience, with start and end dates.
• Typical hours of work per week.
• Indication as to whether it was full or part-time employment.
• A detailed description of duties and skills used in the position(s).
In the event that a company or employer no longer exists, applicants may submit copies of T-4 tax forms or a statement from an accountant to confirm the income and dates of employment.

 

SELF-EMPLOYED WORK EXPERIENCE MUST BE VERIFIED BY SUBMITTING ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS:

  • A notarized affidavit that outlines the duration of employment, the actual start and end dates, and the nature of duties performed, including specific skills used in the position.
  • A copy of a business license or registration supporting the duration of employment noted in the notarized statement.
  • Copies of income tax assessments that indicate self-employment and support the duration of employment noted in the notarized statement; or a statement from an accountant confirming income; or an annual report.
  • At least one letter representing the period of self-employment from a major supplier attesting to materials purchased, and/or a client attesting to the work completed.
