The Additional Basic Qualification course in computer technology provides you with an opportunity to acquire and refine your computer technology skills and teaching skills. This will be accomplished by completing a number of projects, participating in online discussions, creating interactive presentations, and reflecting on your practice. You will learn how current teaching practices apply to computer technology education. You will also consider the unique challenges of the computer technology classroom, and you will have an opportunity to develop and share a number of classroom activities and curriculum units.

Topics studied in this course include:

• teaching skills and classroom management in a computer technology class
• curriculum writing
• legal and ethical responsibilities, and the role of the teacher
• assessment and evaluation
• differentiated instruction
• effective parent/teacher communication and collaboration
• classroom and course structure and organization
• procurement of equipment, supplies, resources, and funding
• dealing with hardware and software obsolescence
• IT requirements and challenges

Note: This course is designed for candidates who have some background in computers. If you are a certified Technology teacher without a background in computers, the course may take significantly longer than 125 hours to complete. This will be due to the additional time it will take you to research and familiarize yourself with computer technology concepts.

Application Requirements

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member.

2) WORK EXPERIENCE LETTERS (not required if you already have Technological Education qualifications)

If this is your first Technological ABQ you must submit letters of experience on company letterhead confirming at least 5 years* of full-time wage-earning experience (not including teaching, training or managing experience) OR at least 2 years* of full-time wage-earning experience AND successful completion of a 3 year post-secondary education program in Computer Technology.

Acceptable Experience:

- Computer Hardware & Systems (CPU, mainboard, disc drives, RAM, video and sound cards)
- Computer Assembly (essential functions of operating system, upgrading, function of BIOS)
- Network Assembly, Programming and Development (bandwidth, throughput, full/half duplex, TCP/IP addressing, firewalls, encryption.
- Data Representation and Digital Logic (binary, hexadecimal numbers)
- Operating Systems – installation and configuration of Windows and Linux
- Programming – basic computer programming including variables, input-output, if-statements and loops
- Electronics – theory and construction of circuits, breadboarding, soldering
- Interfacing –connecting electronics to the computer and controlling it from software (input and output, such as switches and LED lights)

*One year of work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work experience.

**If you were self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license, proof of income and a letter from a major supplier/customer to confirm your 5 years of work experience.
