The ability to read is one of the most important indicators of future success for students in our schools. As teachers, we strive to create classrooms where all children read and write. That goal might be the motivation that brings you to this course.

Reading Part 2 will provide practical opportunities for the experienced teacher to extend and reinforce learning from Reading Part 1. Analysis of guidelines, policies, and procedures will promote a comprehensive understanding of expectations for the teaching of reading. Reflection and self-assessment will be an important part of this process. The expert panel reports and guides to effective instruction will provide a critical lens for developing comprehensive literacy programming. The course will delve deeper into the Ontario Reading Strategy to identify instructional approaches and assessment protocols that target successful reading development in K–12. Ontario classrooms are multilingual environments in which emergent and developing readers require support in specific areas. Considering the diverse needs of learners and the importance of cultural awareness and inclusiveness, this course will provide opportunities to develop instruction that applies theory in meaningful and authentic ways. Candidates will have opportunities to develop collegial networks and conduct collaborative inquiry, integrate digital and print resources, refine their practice, and develop new methods for instruction and assessment.

Course Learning Expectations

In this course you will have the opportunity to:

• interpret and demonstrate your understanding of Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, policies, and guidelines
• apply theoretical understanding to design, implement, and assess programs and practices related to reading
• integrate and implement expectations, strategies, and assessment practices in response to the diverse needs of learners and the promotion of student success in all subject areas
• apply principles of equitable, holistic and inclusive learning environments that respect and honour cultural and linguistic diversity in reading
• apply strategies for collaboration with school/board personnel, parents/guardians, and the community
• integrate a variety of appropriate resources, including technological and communication resources, to enhance professional knowledge and student learning and to value ways of knowing
• explore innovative approaches for integrating environmentally respectful practices

Application Requirements

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 1

2) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your Board confirming that you have one year (194 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that if you have an existing Part 2, Part 3 (Specialist), or Honour Specialist qualification on your OCT record you are not required to submit a form for a Part 2 course. A new form is always required for Part 3 (Specialist).
