To complete this leadership course, you must be able to meet regularly through the course with at least one emergent or developing reader. The course culminating task and a number of other tasks involve a research inquiry project to plan, implement and report on a targeted reading intervention for a specific reader. The reader does not have to be one of your students – he or she may be your own child or any other child (with permission of parent/guardian). If you will not have regular access to a suitable child during the course, you will not be able to complete the course.
This course aims to enable candidates to acquire knowledge of current issues in literacy instruction and their implications for school level curriculum. Participants will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of school and board level leadership through examination of leadership characteristics, exploration of best practices in literacy programming, and planning for effective change initiatives. Developing an understanding of effective staff development strategies will enable participants to become successful in effecting change in an educational setting. A professional bibliography will be developed to provide a foundation for future promotion of, and support for, effective literacy programming.
The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession has been used to develop the learning expectations for the Additional Qualifications, Reading: Specialist course.

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.
*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.
