This course aims to enable candidates to acquire knowledge of current issues in literacy instruction and their implications for school level curriculum. Participants will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of school and board level leadership through examination of leadership characteristics, exploration of best practices in literacy programming, and planning for effective change initiatives. Developing an understanding of effective staff development strategies will enable participants to become successful in effecting change in an educational setting. A professional bibliography will be developed to provide a foundation for future promotion of, and support for, effective literacy programming.

The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession has been used to develop the learning expectations for the Additional Qualifications, Reading: Specialist course.

What You'll Learn

When you have completed your work in the course you will:

• Know ways to identify and respond to change, including the awareness of the changing role of technology in communication and learning
• Know ways to identify and respond to the factors in a diverse and changing society that impact on learning
• Know ways to identify and respond to provincial legislation, local policies and procedures, and community norms that guide the decisions they make
• Engage in a variety of learning opportunities both individual and collaborative that are integrated into practice for the benefit of student learning
• Understand that teaching practice is enhanced by many forms of knowledge, ways of knowing, and ways to access that knowledge
• Motivate and inspire through sharing a vision
• Innovate and effect change through decision making, initiating change, and evaluating and communicating results
• Act both as team member and team leader
• Understand that teacher learning is directly related to student learning
• Act as a role model who demonstrate lifelong learning
• Recognize that continuous professional growth is an integral part of teaching,

• understand the importance of differentiation in reading instruction and assessment

Application Requirements

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 2.

2) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that a new form is always required for a Part 3 (Specialist) course as experience is course/subject specific.
