The teaching of English as a second language has been influenced by a wide range of theories that are connected to particular teaching methods and techniques for instruction. Classroom context, the constant flow of material and information to be taken in by students, the learner’s native language, cultural background, and academic orientation are among the many factors that influence teaching and student progress in second language acquisition. Numerous external and internal factors may impact the rate of language learning. A greater understanding of these factors will facilitate decision-making and the setting of realistic goals for your English language learners (ELLs).

The Teaching English Language Learners: Part 2 course builds on the knowledge and skills that you learned in Part 1. You will research, analyze, and evaluate current trends in teaching and assessing ELLs and the implications that has for the classroom. Other skills relevant to your teaching involve learning how to evaluate instructional materials and develop and implement programs. Cultural considerations in the classroom and building your intercultural competence will be emphasized. References will be made to The Ontario Curriculum document English as a Second Language and English Literacy Development.

Course Learning Expectations

In this course you will have the opportunity to:

• critically reflect on your own second language learning and teaching experiences
• research and analyze current trends in the teaching of second language reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and the implications for ELLs
• understand where language challenges exist in the curriculum and the importance of all educators teaching language and content
• use a variety of evaluation tools to assess student learning, student approaches to learning, and the achievement of curriculum expectations
• develop a sound knowledge of Ministry of Education curriculum expectations for ELLs
• engage in online discussions about teaching scenarios and situations that educators working with ELLs may encounter
• integrate a variety of teaching and learning strategies, activities, and resources into your lesson planning and delivery

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 1

2) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your Board confirming that you have one year (194 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher.

* The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that if you have an existing Part 2, Part 3 (Specialist), or Honour Specialist qualification on your OCT record you are not required to submit a form for a Part 2 course. A new form is always required for Part 3 (Specialist).
