Welcome to a journey that you, as part of our group of Music Educators, are about to take. As "culture bearers" in our schools and communities, we hold a place of significance and responsibility. In our communities, in Canada and, indeed, around the world, the concept of "culture" in itself is fluid, complex and changing. As we bridge the many musical "cultures" with the web of cultures in our school community, we are continually trying to make sense of these, for ourselves and others. Sometimes we experience a clash of cultures, as our cultural norms don't mesh with those of our students. We are both teachers and learners as the world changes before us.

As a community of music educators, spread across a vast and diverse province, we will engage in a learning adventure where we will share, reflect upon and add to each other's understanding. Our knowledge, shaped by our backgrounds, our teaching experiences, and the backgrounds of those who influence us (including our students), will further sculpt and refine as we share insights and perceptions. We will analyze these perceptions, as we embark on research and inquiry with the kind of curiosity and interest that Czikszentmihali speaks of.

What You'll Learn and Do

By the time you have completed the Honour Specialist in Music you should:

• be aware of the major views of student learning in Music
• be familiar with new research and resulting implications for pedagogy
• know of the developments, applications and issues of technology in your Music classroom
• be knowledgeable about curricular topics such as Creativity and Multiculturalism in Music Education
• know of Professional Development opportunities available for teachers of Music
• apply problem solving techniques
• examine your own practice reflectively
• practice critical thinking
• recognize effective leadership traits and be cognizant of decision-making for curricular change
• appreciate recent innovations in Ontario's Ministry of Education documents
• be aware of alternative assessment possibilities

You'll complete activities where you will:

• read articles in the literature about teaching and learning music, curriculum, leadership and student learning
• assess and further develop your leadership style
• work with colleagues planning a Professional Development workshop
• consider alternative practices in Music teaching
• participate in an inquiry process
• develop a multi-grade or single grade curriculum plan
• apply in-depth understanding in reshaping or refining your practice
• be a change agent for a curriculum innovation
• explore assessment strategies in Music

Requirements

Application Requirements

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm that your Certificate of Qualifications shows certification in at least two teaching divisions (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior).

2) YOUR ORIGINAL UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)*

Your transcript(s) must show:

- The equivalent of 9.0 full year undergraduate/graduate courses in this teaching subject with a minimum 'B' average in these courses
- A Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university with the equivalent of 20.0 full year courses

3) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

Please note that a new form is always required for a Specialist course as experience is course/subject specific.

*If you completed a Queen's undergrad (at any time), or a B.Ed., Honour Specialist, or an Intermediate or Senior ABQ course with us within the last 4 years you are not required to resend your transcripts.

**If you completed a medial degree and do not have a major you may be eligible for a Combined Honour Specialist. Please see our FAQ's or contact us for more information.
