The Senior Law Additional Basic qualification is aligned with the Canadian and World Studies Grade 11 and Grade 12 Curriculum Guidelines. You will have the opportunity to connect Ontario expectations to individual law lesson, through discussions and resource sharing with your colleagues in the course. You will develop strategies to address sensitive issues in your classroom, and learn how to promote a safe space for all students in your Law classroom. You will discuss potential challenges unique to teaching a Law course and develop a plan for your own professional development.

What You’ll Learn and Do

By the time you complete Senior Law, you’ll know:

• basic legal concepts
• the Ministry of Education’s expectations for the Law courses
• methodologies for approaching various strands
• how to access top quality online resources for teaching Law
• how to manage classroom discussions of even the most sensitive issues
• what problems are unique to the Law course and how to solve them

You will also have completed activities that allow you to:

• connect Ontario curriculum expectations to individual Law lessons
• provide opportunities to share ideas with peers
• develop student activities, and lesson outlines
• develop assessment tools that are in line with Growing Success
• provide a roadmap for your own professional development with respect to teaching Law

Application Requirements


We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree.


Your transcript(s) must show:

The equivalent of 3.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses in Law/Legal Studies or the equivalent of 2.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses if you already hold another senior qualification. Courses can be considered from various disciplines but the main focus must be basic legal concepts, human rights and freedoms, or Criminal/Civil/Business/Environmental Law.

*If you completed a Queen's undergrad (at any time), or a B.Ed., Honour Specialist, or an Intermediate or Senior ABQ course with us within the last 4 years you are not required to resend your transcripts.
