At a time when most students have technology readily available, the role of the librarian is more important than ever. The librarian stands as a role model for resource-based learning, embedding guided inquiry, and integrating educational technology as information and collections range from books to bytes in the virtual world. The breadth of knowledge that librarians embody places them in a leadership role in their schools. It is the teacher librarian’s responsibility to model new teaching and learning strategies to support both students and teachers. They must act as leaders in a variety of issues such as resource- sharing, fair dealings, and designing spaces for collaborative learning and differentiated learners. They must be flexible and adaptable as the library learning commons (LLC) transforms to become the community learning hub of the school.

Course Learning Expectations

In this course you will have the opportunity to:

• discover how the OCT Standards of Professional Practice and the standards for the school library commons frame the role of the teacher librarian and the planning of the library program and learning commons
• explore the role of the teacher librarian as instructional leader
• learn about and engage in professional learning networks to support professional practice
• explore 21st-century skills and competencies addressing the needs of the learner
• reflect on exemplary practices for partnering and collaboration in support of the LLC
• develop knowledge and skills, and plan for the transition and design of physical and virtual spaces into an LLC
• connect the school effectiveness framework and your school/board goals to support from the library program and environment

Requirements

Application Requirements

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 2.

2) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that a new form is always required for a Part 3 (Specialist) course as experience is course/subject specific.
