Course Description

Special Education Part 2 builds on the learning in Special Education Part 1. This course moves beyond guiding classroom teachers as they provide universal support for students with disabilities to targeted and direct instruction for teachers to address specific skill deficits in students with diverse learning needs. Both typical and atypical development in the areas of oral language, reading, writing, math, and mental health conditions will be examined. Evidence-based practices that are the foundation for developing quality intervention programs, will be explored. You’ll also prepare targeted intervention plans for students in your school. Reflection, collaboration, discussion, and research will all be elements of this learning journey.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • reflect on the importance of an initial assessment of knowledge and skills to determine specific areas of need
  • ensure that instruction is based on evidence-based practice
  • design programming for students that targets specific skill deficits
  • develop a repertoire of effective interventions for students struggling with both academics and behaviour
  • apply appropriately targeted interventions to a variety of areas where universal classroom supports are insufficient
  • share effective evidence-based strategies and practices with colleagues

Course Outline

Each module includes a variety of resources, such as articles, videos, websites, podcasts and other media, as well as discussion posts, reflective tasks, collaborative tasks, culminating tasks, and assignments.

Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate and completion of Special Education Part 1 (SK)
