Course Description

In Special Education Specialist extends the knowledge and skills of Part 2 and continues to focus on theory and practice in special education. Critical to the delivery of special education is the ability of teachers to ensure positive learning experiences for students. The focus of this course is on leadership development by acquiring an in-depth knowledge of special education policies and practices.

Teachers will be involved in analyzing current Saskatchewan legislation, regulations, and policies concerning ethical issues related to students with special needs. By evaluating and extending the application of equitable practices and advocating for the needs of students, parents, and teachers, an understanding of the broader role of the specialist teacher will be acquired.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of programming decisions
  • generate evidence-based strategies and practices for students with significant disabilities
  • demonstrate school-wide leadership in the area of special education
  • design individual student programs based on need
  • explore resources and materials associated with a variety of learning needs
  • learn about various disability categories
  • collaborate with an inter-disciplinary team to develop goals and interventions for complex students
  • advocate for the needs of the most vulnerable students
  • consider the importance of building independence in students with complex needs

Course Outline

Each module includes a variety of resources, such as articles, videos, websites, podcasts and other media, as well as discussion posts, reflective tasks, collaborative tasks, culminating tasks, and assignments.

Application Requirements

Saskatchewan Teacher Certificate, completion of Special Education Part 1 (SK) and completion of Special Education Part 2 (SK)
