Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build the skill and competence required to understand and respond to the needs of students with learning disabilities (LDs). The focus is on reading, writing, math, and nonverbal LDs. The developmental and neurological basis of LDs will be explored. You’ll learn to apply the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education’s needs-based, multi-tiered programming model to develop evidence-based targeted interventions and classroom instructional programs and accommodations for students with LDs,. This course also explores transitional planning and the inclusion of students with LDs throughout and beyond their school experience. Skills and knowledge will be developed through independent and group reading activities, learning activities that emphasize application of knowledge, and building a resource bank that can be used beyond the course. 

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• acquire an in-depth understanding of the cognitive psychology underlying LDs and the various types of LDs
• explore the difference between LDs and other common neurodevelopmental conditions and factors that have an impact on student learning
• review psychoeducational assessment reports to understand a specific student’s LD
• use the multi-tiered, needs-based model to develop evidence-based targeted intervention programs for students with LDs
• learn ways to support classroom teachers in addressing the needs of students with LDs in an inclusive classroom environment
• develop strategies to recognize and support the transitional needs of students throughout and beyond their school experience
