Course Description

“Teaching young children can’t be that hard.  They just play all day.”

Being an early years’ educator is much more complicated than that.  It is challenging work that requires extensive knowledge and training and there is no better place to start than with ‘the child’.  Building our capacity and understanding of the youngest learners is essential in being able to build a meaningful and successful early years’ education program, one that honors the child. Teaching young children is hard and they do play most of the day, but it’s not quite that simple.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you will have the opportunity to

  • acquire a deeper understanding of the child by exploring topics related to play, learning, and social-emotional development and connecting these topics to your teaching practise
  • refine your image of the child, based your personal history and the role it plays in your teaching philosophy
  • explore theories of early learning and development
  • defend play as the most developmentally appropriate way for children to learn
  • discover ways to support children by acknowledging the experiences and abilities that children bring to the learning environment

Course Outline

Each module includes a variety of resources, such as articles, videos, websites, podcasts and other media, as well as discussion posts, reflective tasks, collaborative tasks, culminating tasks, and assignments.
