Course Description

Responding to challenging behaviour can feel overwhelming and exhausting!  This course provides a foundational understanding for educational staff to better support students who struggle with behaviour at school. Grounded in the belief that all behaviour is a form of communication, this course encourages educators to respond to challenging behaviour with curiosity and empathy.

You will explore challenging behaviour through multiple lenses that honour the holistic nature of student development. Using a case study approach, you will examine possible causes of behaviour and apply interventions that are trauma-informed and inclusive. Topics include connections between behaviour and mental health, learning differences, attachment and more. By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of why behaviours occur and how to prevent and respond effectively.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• use a case study student to investigate how behaviour regulation can be impacted by a variety of different physical, social emotional, developmental and physiological needs
• explore the importance of relationship and connection in supporting behavioural regulation
• examine how trauma can impact a student’s ability to regulate their behaviour and what strategies might support trauma-informed practice
• create a behaviour support plan for a case study student
• engage with other professionals to create a collaborative team
• create a repertoire of resources to support continued learning that align with District and Ministry policies and processes

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
