Course Description

How can educators prepare students to thrive as engaged 21st-century citizens? What are the responsibilities of educators in supporting student learning needs across various modalities of education? What is the role of online teaching and learning in today’s educational landscape?

This course will equip you with pedagogical principles and design approaches to give purpose and direction to effective online teaching and learning. It has been purposefully designed to provide you with an immersive online learning experience and multiple opportunities to explore design principles; practice using technological tools, including Microsoft and Google Workspace apps, Padlet, and FeedbackFruits; and discuss ways to build community, assess online learners, and generate ideas for expanding the efficacy of online learning. At the culmination of the course, you will apply your knowledge to create an online module to support your students’ learning needs in a subject area and grade level of your choosing.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you will have the opportunity to

• examine the historical foundations and present state of online teaching and learning in BC
• assess equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) considerations in the online learning environment
• identify ways of leveraging technology to build efficiencies in planning, managing time, and communicating with online students
• incorporate critical and creative thinking skills by embracing new technology and promoting clever solutions through invention and innovation in teaching and learning practices
• describe ways of building community and authentically engaging students in the virtual teaching environment
• define effective and ineffective feedback strategies specific to the online learning environment
• synthesize course learnings by designing an online module in the provided learning management system (LMS) using a chosen subject area and grade level

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
