Course Description

What does it mean to co-create an inclusive Kindergarten classroom environment that is responsive to all learners and allows for students, families and teachers to be their authentic selves? What teaching methods and Indigenous pedagogies lead to strong relationships and a deeper exploration of the Kindergarten curriculum? How can we share the learning experiences in a visible way to engage families in the exploration of identity and community?

This course offers opportunities to examine different teaching pedagogies and evidence-based approaches as support in daily classroom routines and structures of an inclusive and compassionate Kindergarten classroom environment. Participants will have opportunities to collaborate with course colleagues to examine the BC curriculum, the Early Learning Framework and a variety of Indigenous pedagogies, as a way of engaging all learners in authentic manner.

Course participants will actively engage in creating a toolkit with new strategies, teaching methods and pedagogical approaches.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• investigate the BC Kindergarten curriculum and the Early Learning Framework
• explore ways to connect several Indigenous pedagogies that will support your understanding in reconciliation and your role as a Kindergarten teacher
• engage in self-reflection to examine how your identity affects your pedagogies and your interactions with diverse learners
• apply educational frameworks such as universal design for learning, self-regulated learning, play-based learning and trauma-informed practices, to co-create an inclusive classroom for Kindergarten students, families and community
• interact with pedagogical narratives and technology to make learning visible
• create a personal anthology of learning activities, articles, curriculum links and other resources that will support your ongoing journey as a Kindergarten teacher

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
