Course Description

Take a deep dive into the BC curriculum and the BC early learning framework. This course provokes thinking through its focus on the child's image, inclusive learning environments and the role of play. Understandings include Indigenous content and histories and how to weave social and emotional well-being into the Kindergarten day.

In this course and through an extensive exploration of aspects of the BC early learning framework, you'll establish a firm foundation in the curriculum and develop inclusive practices that support working with children and families. You will have the opportunity to design learning experiences and environments reflecting your pedagogy and the image of the child, families and communities. You will understand how First Peoples principles of learning help guide an early learning practice and why understanding Indigenous histories are essential in working toward truth and reconciliation as an educator. You will also have the opportunity to share ideas and observations with others in ways that will spur further thinking about your practice and work with Kindergarten children and families.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• identify contributions of Indigenous peoples to early learning frameworks and how these contributions are essential to truth and reconciliation
• explore the necessity of reflecting on biases, the role of families as contributors to children’s well-being and learning, and reasons for truth and reconciliation
• recognize how content, curricular competencies, big ideas and core competencies connect to the elements of the BC Kindergarten curriculum
• plan experiences to create connection and reconnection to land, community and place
• describe the vision and elements of the BC early learning framework as they relate to your thinking and pedagogy
• create playful ways of learning and design experiences focusing on SEL and well-being
• integrate Indigenous content when designing Kindergarten experiences
• design an inclusive space that takes into consideration diverse abilities and learning needs, varying socioeconomic statuses, geographic isolation, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and family structure and values

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
