Course Description

What is a mathematics leader? What are the qualities of a mathematics leader? Are you one?

Mathematics leader is more than a title bestowed on a position in the school, district or provincial government. A math leader has qualities that allow them to inspire and affect the professional learning of others.

This course will explore issues and topics related to your role as a mathematics leader. As you complete readings, listen to podcasts and watch videos from mathematics leaders, you'll reflect on how these new ideas might impact your personal and professional beliefs and practice. Through collaborative learning, you'll have the chance to communicate your ideas and build capacity as a leader to develop your professional learning network.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• reflect on current educational priorities in the context of teaching and learning math
• understand how a teacher's relationship with mathematics and beliefs about teaching affect the decisions they make in the mathematics leadership role
• value the role of the mathematics leader as a change agent in teaching and learning math
• boost your professional growth and keep abreast of research trends
• explore principles of effective pedagogy, assessment, equity and social justice practices
• examine how changes in mathematics pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, and provincial priorities have had an impact on teaching and learning math
• collaborate with other educators to develop your and their personal goals
• create a professional learning experience based on your learning from the course

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

*Teaching Experience is not required but it is advised that candidates gain some experience before completing this leadership course. There are many opportunities to gain experience through volunteer work and community based programs.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
