Course Description

What does it mean to struggle? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, to struggle is "to experience difficulty and make a very great effort to do something; to be in danger of failing or being defeated." At−risk students struggle in mathematics. This course looks at various ways to help at−risk students in your math class. You'll learn strategies to enhance at−risk students' learning and, ultimately, all students in your class. You will critically reflect on your classroom teaching practices and what's working and missing. You will also be part of a professional learning community that is responsive to your inquiries and will broaden your thinking.

In this course, you'll have the opportunity to

• explore various meanings of at−risk and what is relevant in the curriculum for at-risk learners (PLS—prioritized learning standards)
• discover how parents, educators and the community play a role in the success of at−risk student learning
• incorporate First Peoples Principles of Learning into lesson planning to enhance learning for at-risk students
• learn the role of response to intervention (RTI) in the class, school and district
• discuss the use of technology for at−risk students
• explore assessment strategies for learning and of learning that benefit at-risk students
• design a scaffolded lesson that includes strategies to benefit at−risk math students
• build a toolbox of strategies to support at−risk students
• create a learning progression and integrate literacy strategies into lessons

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
