Course Description

Are you teaching a diverse group of students that includes English language learners (ELLs)? Do you feel unprepared to support these learners in the school environment? Schools and educators in BC must provide services to ELL students to support their literacy skills, curriculum outcomes, and social well-being as they navigate their education.

This course explores the essential role of the ELL educator through readings, videos, reflections, projects, and discussions. You will learn about ELLs and their stories and confront some of the preconceived notions we might have of marginalized groups. You will consider elements of language acquisition, the importance of supportive learning environments, and how to plan for ELLs.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• explore characteristics and factors influencing ELLs and discover the importance of identity in learning
• recognize assumptions and misconceptions by exploring personal and societal beliefs and biases about ELLs
• review second language standards for ELLs
• explore second language acquisition and learning theories 
• learn about the importance of building relationships and supporting well-being through the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion practices    
• practice culturally responsive pedagogy using second language acquisition pedagogy, theories, and learning practices
• examine supportive environments and strategies for ELLs
• advocate for ELLs in your current or future learning environments 

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
