Course Description

Specialist teachers with knowledge and expertise in supporting English language development play an integral role in BC schools where cultural and linguistic diversity continues to grow. In school districts of all sizes, dedicated and skilled ELL specialists plan and provide a range of services to students who are in the process of becoming multilingual. They actively promote and support inclusive, equitable, and culturally informed school communities necessary for students to thrive socially and academically. Through instructional leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, ELL specialists ensure optimal learning opportunities for the students in their classes.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• explore the role of the ELL specialist from various perspectives
• consider the concepts, complexities, and issues related to programming, equitable instruction, and culturally informed practices
• deepen your understanding of effective assessment and instructional practices that support ELLs’ language and literacy development
• explore leading for equity and capacity building through evidence-based pedagogy and innovative instruction
• examine the conditions that support effective collaboration
• develop resources for teachers to support the implementation of ELL services and linguistically informed instruction 

Application Requirements

1) Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

2) Completion of English Language Learners Part 2.

*Teaching Experience is not required but it is advised that candidates gain some experience before completing the second and specialist courses. There are many opportunities to gain experience through volunteer work and community based programs.

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
