Course Description

As an educator, you play a vital role in improving educational experiences for the diverse populations of students representing various groups and backgrounds. This course will examine intercultural knowledge, skills and attitudes and prepare teachers to promote the values of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Engaging in self-reflection, cultural exploration, and ongoing discussions will boost your knowledge of Canadian cultural diversity. Throughout the course, you'll develop effective intercultural teaching, learning and assessment methods and greater sensitivity toward those whose knowledge is being represented. You will apply the appropriate terminology to deliver equitable and inclusive teaching approaches and enhance communication through active listening and reflective practice. In addition, the course explores the core values of allyship, culture and diversity, Indigenous education, antiracism, and a culturally relevant education system.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• develop an awareness of unique and diverse Canadian populations and add personal and professional perspectives
• determine and analyze effective methods and planning for resource selection, instruction, and assessment for the diverse populations of learners in your learning environment 
• integrate the concepts of allyship in developing and strengthening personal and professional relationships through an equitable stance
• identify the elements of intercultural competence and the knowledge, skills and attitudes that define it
• use practical approaches for intercultural competence in teaching, learning and assessment
• create, in your educational context, a blog on teaching and learning in an intercultural setting

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
