BC Indigenous Peoples, Part 2 explores how educators can position themselves as learners alongside their students. Through self-reflection and (un)learning, you will develop your understanding of the relationship between Indigenous populations and the state, how you have come to know your own identity as Canadians alongside Indigenous peoples, and how to transfer that understanding into educational practice. Truth and self-awareness are essential in educational environments to foster relationships with students, interact with the content, and promote equitable educational spaces.
This course focuses on the themes of reclamation, resurgence, and reconcili-action of Indigenous peoples and communities. Meaningful allyship can be achieved when Indigenous voices and knowledge are centred, honoured, and valued in classrooms. This leads to learning environments which prioritize cultural safety, teacher humility, and continuous relationship-building with local Indigenous communities, students, and families. This course will build your awareness and understanding of how to support Indigenous learners and how Indigenous perspectives can be meaningfully integrated into your daily practice.

1) Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.
ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.

*Teaching Experience is not required but it is advised that candidates gain some experience before completing the second and specialist courses. There are many opportunities to gain experience through volunteer work and community based programs.
