Course Description

What does it mean to have a designer mindset? What strategies can you utilize to build a culture of STEM in the classroom and at your school? How can we help students tackle modern problems that require an interdisciplinary approach? 

STEM education requires educators to create opportunities for students to see the connections between Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Design thinking leads to the development of a design mindset that supports students in seeing STEM concepts working together to tackle local, provincial and global challenges. 

In this course, you will have opportunities to collaborate with course colleagues to discuss and create meaningful learning experiences for senior level students through a STEM lens that incorporates modern technologies and Indigenous worldviews and perspectives.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • explore STEM principles while examining personal opinions and biases about STEM education
  • investigate key components of design frameworks, including human-centred design and the cultivation of a designer mindset 
  • discover your collaborative personality, and create collaborative learning experiences in the STEM classroom
  • analyze modern technology tools and their role in STEM lesson planning and implementation
  • examine place-based learning through a STEM lens 
  • create STEM learning opportunities to address social, ethical, environmental and global issues
  • develop lesson and unit plans that incorporate STEM principles, design thinking and Indigenous worldviews and perspectives

Course Outline

Each module includes a variety of resources, such as articles, videos, websites, podcasts and other media, as well as discussion posts, reflective tasks, collaborative tasks, culminating tasks, and assignments.

Application Requirements

Courses and Post-Graduate Certificates are approved by TQS for Category Upgrade. If you would like these courses to be used towards Category Upgrading, you must have a valid BC Teacher Certificate.

ECEs, EAs, and other education professionals are welcome to take the courses without Certification.
