In collaboration with the Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE)
Queen’s University Continuing Teacher Education, in partnership with the Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE), is launching a new Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) course in Manufacturing - designed by educators, for educators.
This course offers an innovative approach to professional learning, drawing on the expertise of experienced Ontario manufacturing teachers, curriculum leaders, and industry professionals. With input from OCTE’s active training teams, the course will reflect current best practices, industry-aligned content, and real-world classroom experience.
What makes the Queen’s Manufacturing ABQ different from other ABQ courses?
This ABQ is delivered through a blended model designed to offer both flexibility and hands-on relevance:
Learning Through Queen’s (Online Modules)
Pedagogical learning focuses on teaching tasks that are transferable across all technological education subjects.
Develop foundational skills in curriculum planning, assessment, classroom safety, and inclusive instruction
Complete progress updates and a final capstone project that demonstrate readiness to teach Manufacturing Technology Grades 9/10
Learning Through OCTE (In-Person Sessions)
Sector-specific skill development ensuring candidates are prepared to teach Manufacturing in real-world classroom and shop settings.
Participate in hands-on training in machining and welding etc., aligned with current industry and curriculum standards
Build technical confidence and instructional strategies specific to Manufacturing education
Teachers who have successfully participated in the approved OCTE professional development as of [insert date here] may submit proof of completion and then enroll in and complete only the online portion of the course to fulfill the ABQ certification requirements.
