Course Schedule

Course Description

This course will introduce you to the current trends in teaching Health and Physical Education (H&PE) at the elementary school level. You will explore ethical teaching standards, culturally responsive pedagogy, truth and reconciliation as it pertains to H&PE, and anti-oppressive education. You will also delve into equity, diversity, and inclusion in H&PE. You will dig into the H&PE curriculum to get a better understanding of the strands, especially as they pertain to the health component of the curriculum. You will focus on lesson planning, unit plans, and long-range plans. You will also focus on understanding the Fundamental Movement Skills and the Teaching Games for Understanding model, both key components of the Ontario curriculum. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to look at resources and best practices from around the world. The tasks that you complete are designed to be relevant to your own teaching practices.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• gain an understanding of the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum (2019) and relevant supporting documents (e.g., PPM 138)
• demonstrate an understanding of long-range planning and lesson planning as it pertains to teaching Health and Physical Education (H&PE) courses
• design effective tools for the assessment and evaluation of students’ learning in H&PE
• demonstrate an understanding of physical literacy, fundamental movement skills, and Teaching Games for Understanding and how to use them when planning a quality physical education program
• understand the importance of creating a safe, equitable, and inclusive environment in the H&PE classroom
• create lessons that enhance the engagement and enjoyment of all students so they develop a lifelong love of physical activity
• understand the current best practices for delivering quality lessons on mental health literacy, healthy eating, human development and sexual health, substance use, addictions, and related behaviors, personal safety and injury prevention, and other topics that are part of the health curriculum

Application Requirements

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm OCT Membership and undergraduate degree, with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
