Course Description

Teacher Leadership Specialist empowers educators to synthesize their expertise and spearhead systemic transformation across school, board, and community contexts. Adopting an organizational lens, you will engage in critical inquiry to evaluate the intersectionality of policy, power, and practice while facilitating the deep integration of Indigenous ways of knowing and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). You will advance your role as a leader of leaders by building mentorship capacity, fostering collective efficacy, and leveraging data storytelling to disrupt systemic barriers and promote ecological justice. By developing a comprehensive systemic impact research and leadership proposal, you will articulate a visionary plan to institutionalize an inclusive school culture and strengthen system stewardship.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• develop a systemic leadership philosophy and ethical practice, and critically analyze legislation and policy at a system level
• lead change and innovation in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-oppression, and inclusive practices
• lead and apply educational research to support systemic change and contribute to the knowledge base
• evaluate policies, processes, and practices that foster openness to innovation, culturally inclusive pedagogies, and the democratization of knowledge
• develop mentorship capacity, foster professional learning communities, and build collective efficacy
• analyze and measure the impact of policy and curriculum at the school, at the board, and on system-level advocacy
• leverage culturally inclusive resources that support learning in order to foster engagement and well-being
• identify leadership practices that disrupt systemic barriers and foster collective efficacy in implementing culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy
• develop systemic engagement with and application of data to inform decision-making processes that support each learner

Application Requirements

1. OCT Membership showing completion of Part 2.
2. CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that a new form is always required for a Part 3 (Specialist) course as experience is course/subject specific.

Refund Schedule

• If you drop a course by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee
• If you drop a course after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee
