Course Description

The Senior Science—General AQ will remind you of the importance of science in our ever-changing society and will encourage you to share the intrigue, discipline, importance and wonder of science while helping Senior Science students develop knowledge, skills, habits of mind and best practices to become life-long learners. 

The emphasis is on the development of differentiated student-centred teaching and learning that supports students’ conceptual development, enduring understandings and wellness. By the end of the course, you will feel comfortable with the Senior Science curriculum, how students learn in science, how to ensure equity and cultivate success in the Science classroom and how to best use assessment and evaluation practices. Your skills and knowledge will be enhanced to give you confidence, resources, strategies, and a positive outlook on teaching Senior Science.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course you’ll have the opportunity to

• understand, analyze, and apply strategies to build a caring, equitable, safe, and engaging learning community that leads to achievement, success, growth, wellness and lifelong learning 
• critically analyze and evaluate the design and content of the Senior Science curriculum to understand and apply the components within 
• incorporate contributions and ways of knowing from the Indigenous peoples in Canada to create a richer and more holistic approach to the Senior Science curriculum
• establish and implement necessary modifications and accommodations in the Senior Science curriculum and adapt activities for students with exceptionalities
• integrate principles of environmental stewardship, sustainability, and student well-being into classroom practices
• ensure safety in the Senior Science classroom by being proactive, prepared and, if necessary, appropriately reactive
• understand and apply best practices including inquiry, investigation, engineering design, integration and implementation of technology
• appreciate and demonstrate that assessment and evaluation is best framed in a growth-based mindset and that a combination of assessment of, for and as learning can maximize student success, achievement, and wellness
• create and evaluate a focus curriculum unit using best design, instruction and assessment and evaluation practices

Application Requirements

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree.

2) YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)*

Your transcript(s) must show: The equivalent of 3.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses in Science or the equivalent of 2.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses if you already hold another senior qualification. Courses can include Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

*If you completed a Queen's undergrad (at any time), or a B.Ed., Honour Specialist, or an Intermediate or Senior ABQ course with us within the last 4 years you are not required to resend your transcripts.

Refund Schedule

• If you drop a course by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee
• If you drop a course after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee
