CONT612: Guidance and Career Education Part 2

Course Description

Building on Guidance and Career Education Part I, this course will give you the opportunity to further develop your professional practice by examining topics and issues of particular relevance to today’s counsellor, school and community. You’ll expand on your knowledge and skills and reflect critically on your current practice. Topics you’ll explore include counselling, collaboration, culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy, supporting transitions, and student mental health and well-being. Tasks and course assignments will be practical and purposeful and will further support the development of leadership potential in this area.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• deepen your understanding and interpretation of Ontario Ministry of Education, school board, and school policies and guidelines connected to Guidance and Career Education
• use pedagogies that reflect the professional identity of educators as described in the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession, the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Foundations of Professional Practice
• demonstrate strategies for working collaboratively with school personnel, parents/guardians and the community
• create safe, healthy, equitable and inclusive learning environments
• explore professional practice through inquiry, dialogue and reflection
• identify, share and analyze best practices of school guidance and career education programs
• recognize and be sensitive to the diverse experiences of students and offer anti-oppressive and anti-bias Guidance and Career Education support
• access resources and build networks for ongoing learning
• put inquiry into practice through reflection, active engagement and collaboration

Application Requirements

1. OCT Membership showing completion of Part 1
2. CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your Board confirming that you have one year (194 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that if you have an existing Part 2, Part 3 (Specialist), or Honour Specialist qualification on your OCT record you are not required to submit a form for a Part 2 course. A new form is always required for Part 3 (Specialist).

Refund Schedule

• If you drop a course by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee
• If you drop a course after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee
