Course Description

This course applies innovative 21st-century tools to best support and prepare visual arts educators for leadership roles and their learners for real-world applications. You will engage in a comprehensive examination of approaches to teaching Senior Visual Arts. You will analyze critical discussions about equity, inclusion and diversity, distinguishing between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. You will examine the role of art in social and environmental justice, developing compelling and relevant themes with which to engage students and give voice to their authentic lived experiences, and creating an inclusive and healthy Senior Visual Arts classroom. You will conduct effective and sensitive critiques and devise productive assessment and evaluation protocols that will help all learners to succeed. Course assignments are designed to be directly applicable to your own professional practice and hone your potential for arts leadership.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• apply 21st-century approaches to arts education
• examine the creative process, innovative technologies, and artistic development to enhance learner engagement and learner voice and choice
• expand professional connections and professional development opportunities 
• explore culturally responsive teaching and First Nations perspectives to enrich curriculum content, instruction and relationships
• investigate historical and contemporary artists, with specific focus on the historically suppressed voices of Indigenous, racialized, BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ artists, the ideas and techniques that they explore, and how to incorporate this into an inclusive curriculum 
• integrate non-barrier approaches to inclusive pedagogical practices and instruction
• apply assessment and evaluation strategies to engage and empower learners 
• reflect on your own creative practice in an inclusive space

Application Requirements

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree.

2) YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)*

Your transcript(s) must show: The equivalent of 3.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses in Visual Arts or the equivalent of 2.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses if you already hold another senior qualification. Studio courses in painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. are required. Some Art History courses can be used to support the studio courses.

*If you completed a Queen's undergrad (at any time), or a B.Ed., Honour Specialist, or an Intermediate or Senior ABQ course with us within the last 4 years you are not required to resend your transcripts.

Refund Schedule

If you drop a course:

1. by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee.
2. after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee.
