Course Description

This AQ course is a professional development course designed for educators teaching Senior-level History. This course will equip you with advanced pedagogical strategies, curriculum design expertise, and tools for inclusive and critical historical instruction. 

In this course, you will explore how to foster historical inquiry, integrate diverse narratives, and promote ethical reflection in the classroom. Through collaborative learning and reflective practice, you will enhance your ability to engage students in meaningful historical analysis and connect past events to contemporary issues.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • explore and apply effective teaching strategies tailored to Senior History students
  • integrate historical inquiry, ethical reflection, and diverse narratives into lesson planning
  • guide students in analyzing historical events and evaluating sources
  • use innovative methods and digital tools to connect historical content to current societal issues
  • ensure representation of Indigenous, Black, and other marginalized voices in historical narratives
  • align teaching practices with Ontario curriculum standards for equity and inclusion
  • create balanced programming that supports both content mastery and skill development
  • incorporate primary and secondary sources, digital resources, and inquiry-based learning strategies
  • reflect on instructional practices to improve student outcomes
  • collaborate with peers to align teaching with curriculum standards and respond to diverse student needs

Course Outline

Each module includes a variety of resources, such as articles, videos, websites, podcasts and other media, as well as discussion posts, reflective tasks, collaborative tasks, culminating tasks, and assignments.

Application Requirements

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree.

2) YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)*

Your transcript(s) must show: The equivalent of 3.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses in History or the equivalent of 2.0 full-year undergraduate/graduate courses if you already hold another senior qualification.

Please email a copy of your unofficial undergraduate transcript to cedmail@queensu.ca

If you completed an undergraduate degree at Queen’s at any time, or finished a B.Ed., Honour Specialist, or an Intermediate or Senior ABQ course with us within the past four years, you do not need to submit your transcript again.

Refund Schedule

  • If you drop a course by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee
  • If you drop a course after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee
