Course Description

In this course, you will explore the role of the teacher librarian as a leader, collaborator, and advocate in the school community. You will examine how the library learning commons (LLC) functions as a dynamic learning environment shaped by relationships, resources, policy, and professional judgment. Across the modules, you will engage with research, Ministry documents, and professional frameworks to think critically about equity, access, digital responsibility, curriculum support, and collection management. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own school context, question assumptions, and connect ideas from the course to your daily practice. The course culminates in the creation of a focused improvement plan that brings together your learning and supports your ongoing growth as a responsive and reflective teacher librarian.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you will have the opportunity to

• analyze the role of the teacher librarian and the LLC in relation to learning, equity, and school culture
• evaluate policies, frameworks, and research that shape LLC programming, access, and professional practice\
• apply equity-informed, culturally responsive, and inclusive principles to the design of LLC spaces, programs, and collections
• interpret student, school, and community contexts to identify meaningful needs and opportunities for LLC development
• synthesize research, policy, and professional knowledge to inform instructional, digital, and collection decisions
• justify professional judgments related to access, inclusion, ethics, and intellectual freedom using evidence and policy
• design collaborative learning supports that integrate curriculum, assessment, and information literacy
• evaluate the ethical, legal, and pedagogical implications of digital tools and information practices in school contexts

Application Requirements

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 1

2) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your Board confirming that you have one year (194 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity.

For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

*Please note that if you have an existing Part 2, Part 3 (Specialist), or Honour Specialist qualification on your OCT record you are not required to submit a form for a Part 2 course. A new form is always required for Part 3 (Specialist).

Refund Schedule

• If you drop a course by the midpoint of the course, you will receive 100% of your course fee
• If you drop a course after the midpoint, before the end of the course, you will receive 50% of your course fee
