Using a leadership and coaching lens, the Kindergarten Specialist additional qualifications course will allow you to explore, apply, and deepen your knowledge and skills of Kindergarten best practices. By exploring your own professional practice through inquiry, reflection, modelling, and sharing, you will learn how to provide leadership to your teacher colleagues. Your leadership will aid in building partnerships and implementing emergent curriculum and play-based/inquiry-based approaches to learning and development across the social, emotional, communication/language, cognitive, and physical domains. This course will provide plenty of opportunity to connect and collaborate with teacher colleagues as you work to become a leader in the field of early childhood learning.

Course Learning Expectations

In this course you will have the opportunity to:

• explore your own professional practice using a leadership and coaching lens to engage other teachers in discussions about their ongoing inquiry, thinking, and reflection on Kindergarten practices
• research and engage with colleagues about current early years issues with the goal of building your own professional learning network
• demonstrate strategies for team building and reciprocal learning with teaching partners, in-school personnel, parents/guardians, and the community
• engage and assist Kindergarten teachers in implementing expectations, strategies, and assessment practices in response to the individual needs of students
• actively model how to teach and support students from diverse backgrounds with intentionality and inclusivity
• share your understanding of the rights of children in a leadership capacity
• communicate and model programs that allow for a young learner’s multiple ways of representing when communicating ideas, concepts, and observations
• synthesize and share with teacher colleagues observation-based strategies as a key component of assessment in the Kindergarten program

Application Requirements

1) OCT Membership showing completion of Part 2.

Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines "Supervisory Official" as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the "supervisory official" is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.

**Please note that a new form is always required for a Part 3 (Specialist) course as experience is course/subject specific.
