Course Description

This course equips educators to apply anti-oppressive principles and thereby create inclusive and equitable learning environments for First Nations, Métis and Inuit children. You will learn to respectfully integrate Indigenous pedagogies and differentiate among the three main Indigenous groups in Canada. The course focuses on identifying and using culturally relevant resources, exploring Two-Eyed Seeing and integrating Ministry of Education policies within Indigenous contexts. Emphasis is placed on learner-centered pedagogy, effective assessment practices and collective responsibility for learning through professional networks. Completing this course will enhance your ability to support First Nations, Métis and Inuit children in all educational settings.

What You Will Learn and Do

In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to

• apply anti-oppressive principles to foster an inclusive, safe and equitable learning environment for First Nations, Métis and Inuit children
• integrate Indigenous pedagogies into teaching practice with respect and recognition
• differentiate between the three main Indigenous groups in Canada
• utilize culturally relevant and authentic resources in the learning environment
• explore Two-Eyed Seeing by integrating Ministry policies, frameworks, guidelines and strategies within the context of Indigenous histories, perspectives and knowledge systems
• adopt learner-centered pedagogy and best practices for assessment and evaluation of First Nations, Métis and Inuit children
• reflect on the expression "Nothing about us without us" in the context of data collection and land acknowledgments
• analyze historical and contemporary documentation and its impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit children
• adopt collective responsibility for learning
• develop a professional learning network
• identify key individuals within your educational institution or board for pathway and transition planning
